Where Can I View Free Mugshots Within DuPage County?

Mugshots are part of a person’s criminal background record and can be accessed under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).1

You can often find these photos with inmate or arrest details when browsing jail rosters online or by making FOIA requests to record custodians—usually the county sheriff’s office and city police departments.

It’s the same with DuPage County, where you can view mugshots by checking in with the sheriff’s office at the county level or the local police departments for city-level searches. Statewide searches are even more convenient because the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and State Police (ISP) stores offender information online, including mugshots.

The following part lays out ways to view offender images through county agencies.

Look Up State & Federal Prison Mugshots in Illinois

The state of Illinois is generous when it comes to showing prisoner identification photos. With this, there are two departments you can refer to—the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and State Police (ISP).

IDOC: You can track down details and images of state prisoners using the IDOC inmate search tool.10 This tool lets you search by name, birthdate, or DOC number and shows a prisoner’s mugshot along with other details like the facility they’re held in and sentencing information of the inmate, among others.

A screenshot taken from the prisoner search tool of the Illinois Department of Corrections displays the offender's front and side mugshots, DOC number, name, facility, status, location, and physical profile.

Through IDOC, you can also see photos of wanted individuals and parolee sex registrants in the state.

ISP: The Illinois State Police also provides information about sexual offenders, including their mugshots.

For individuals who have committed federal offenses, they are housed under the facilities managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), which are spread throughout the United States—6 of them located within Illinois.

If you’re looking for a federal prisoner, utilize is the BOP inmate locator. This option provides basic inmate information (e.g. name, race, sex, custody status/facility, etc.) despite not showing mugshots.

Remember, mugshots are considered public records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140) and federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), but they should be used responsibly.11 It’s prohibited to use these records to stalk, harass, or discriminate against someone.

Moreover, if used for employment purposes, it should comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

By using the listed tools and following the processes laid out for conducting a DuPage County mugshot search, interested parties can now gather their needed data more effectively.
